Students of Puerto Rican heritage who are high school graduates, GED recipients, community college students or graduates and are pursuing some form of higher education are encouraged to apply. California students will be given priority.

SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES
The Western Region Puerto Rican Council, Inc. (“WRPRC”) promotes and contributes to higher educational opportunities in the form of scholarships to high school graduates, GED recipients, and transferring community college students of Puerto Rican heritage who is or will be attending a regionally or nationally accredited college, university or vocational school. The scholarships are funded cooperatively by the WRPRC, private corporations, and supporting individuals dedicated to the preservation of Puerto Rican culture and the education of our community.
Requirements
1. Applicants must be of Puerto Rican heritage/ancestry
2. Applicants must be a graduating senior, GED recipient, or Community College student who is planning to attend an accredited public or private University, Community College , or approved Technical/Vocational school.
3. Scholarship Criteria :
Financial Need. Must attache copy of current year 1040 tax return as verification
“C” average verified via transcript (please no exceptions)
"Official" Transcript - (unofficial transcript will not be accepted)
Must provide proof of current college enrollment or college letter of acceptance
Two letters of recommendation that demonstrate leadership and character (letters of recommendation must come from teachers, guidance counselors or leaders in your community. Family recommendation letters will not be considered.)
Evidence of Community Service
2 Typed Essays (see scholarship application for details)
4. Your application must be written legibly or typed, filled out completely, and MAILED to the WRPRC Scholarship Committee. For your scholastic records, schools will follow their standard administrative procedures and forward transcripts to the WRPRC Scholarship Committee. (No exceptions, please) It is your responsibility to ensure that the WRPRC receives your transcripts before the dead line. Incomplete applications will not be accepted or considered. ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE SIGNED & DATED. (no exceptions)

7. APPLICATIONS, SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS SUCH AS LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION, TRANSCRIPTS, LETTER OF ADMISSION, ETC. MUST BE POSTMARKED NO LATER THAN SATURDAY JUNE 19th, 2010 and MUST BE RECEIVED BY THE WESTERN REGION SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE ON OR BEFORE FRIDAY JUNE 25th, 2010.
Awarded scholarship recipients will be notified via email and recognized Sunday August 22nd at the PRUMA Center (www.pruma.org) located at 616 E. Street, Union City, Ca 94587. Recipients and/or a family member of the recipient MUST attend the awards ceremony in order to receive the full scholarship amount. Tickets are $40.00 per person and will go towards 2011 scholarship recipients. This includes dinner, recipient recognition ceremony, live band and DJ. Scholarship recipient admission is free.
